Fake news is news created to mislead or misinform people through traditional news media or social media. It is a serious issue faced by not just India but around the world. People around the world are sensitive to things like religion, caste and economy. It revolves around these topics and also tries to create fear and hatred in the minds of people.

Fake news creates: Misinformation,Community hatred and Violence

The major platform for the spread of fake news are social media platforms like Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter etc. Companies around the world, especially social media companies have taken various steps to curb the spread of fake news via social media.

During the time of Covid pandemic the rise in fake news was alarming. Misinformation and fake remedies to cure the disease were on the rise. This situation was used to spread fear, confusion and mistrust among people.

    Thus it is important that we take certain steps from our end to stop the spread of fake news:
  • Check for credibility: See if you are getting correct information from the source you are supposed to get. For example, are you getting exam related information from a website dedicated to such information?

  • Ask questions:Ask the sender where he got the message from.

  • Do your own research:Cross check facts and read. Even if the news is on major media channels, doing your own research allows you to better insights about the situation.
